A WOMAN fell in front of a moving train at Eastleigh station and survived.

Seconds before the incident on Tuesday night, the unnamed woman was talking on a mobile phone. Then she ran forward and plunged on to the track.

The train driver spotted the woman, aged about 45, and was able to slam on the brakes.

Track power was cut and all trains were stopped for 35 minutes while paramedics worked to rescue her.

Today the woman is continuing to be treated for serious injuries at Southampton General Hospital.

Pauline West, who saw the incident, said the woman suddenly dashed across platform one and plunged on to the track below.

Mrs West, 52, of Wellbrokes Gardens, Chandler's Ford, said: "She was chatting to somebody on the phone. She sounded very low. She just ran across and went under there. I tried to grab hold of the arm of her coat but she just ran. It was too quick.

"They pushed the train back and pulled her out on a medical stretcher with a neck brace so she wouldn't break any bones. She looked drowsy but quite calm."

PC Andy Bolton of the British Transport Police said: "A female did fall under a train at Eastleigh. I think the train touched her but didn't go over the top of her. The train was pulling into the station so it was slowing down anyway. Her injuries aren't minor but they aren't life-threatening."

Two other rail passengers gave witness statements, which will be studied along with CCTV footage and the driver's statement, following the incident at 10pm on Tuesday.
