Few people would have predicted that any match involving Gosport & Fareham would be classed as a bottom-of-the-table battle, but that is what they are embroiled in tomorrow when they visit winless Cobham.
With just one win from seven starts, the men from the peninsula know that nothing other than a victory over the divisions' whipping boys will suffice and they are able to name a strong side in an effort to do just that.
Recent recruit Ben Hughes, who scored on his debut last week at Wimbledon, is a doubt for the eighth away day of the season as is centre Richard Lloyd but winger Jon Hogarth, lock Harry Harrison and Navy back-row Mark Pollard are all set to return.
Coach Sean Fanning knows the importance of this match. "I am hoping that we can snatch two points from one of our away games and we have a good chance of doing that tomorrow because Cobham are struggling," he said.
"It is important that we play well and win but at the moment we are not able to put out our best players and the results are showing that. Once again, we have injury problems so our team will not be finalised until tomorrow morning."
Unbeaten league leaders Barnes are Portsmouth's nut to crack but they go without influential back Matt Gronow and are still minus skipper Neil Styles, who is out for a further two months through injury.
It is becoming a logistical nightmare for coach Ian Chandler as week-on-week the injuries get worse although Tim Snowden has recovered from injury and is available for consideration. But there are a host of others missing.
If he thought he had it bad, spare a thought for Havant's director of rugby Adam King who has added six more players to his injury list in the last week to tag onto the other half dozen long-term absentees that are on the sidelines.
Centre Nick Cooper now faces an operation on his broken cheekbone, hooker Steve Cruddas is out with concussion and coach Owen Cobbe has facial damage to name but three.
The Hooks Lane side travel to mid-table Bishop's Stortford but who will make the journey is still under some doubt and King comments, "the last man standing will get a game."
"Although I have never known anything like it, we cannot feel sorry for ourselves and despite the disruptions this season, the boys have dug in and battled for the cause."
Prop Adrian Mitchell may start, as could Dylan Raubenheimer if Dave Archer misses out but it does depend on the physio's diagnosis and how often the exit door of his room swings open.
