A FILM project based on the early life of Craig David will be given a high-profile launch today.

Exciting plans for Silent Soul, a 13-minute film by Southampton-based Ocean Terminal Films, are being unveiled at Harbour Lights Picture House in Ocean Village.

The film-makers, who include Mark Hill - one half of Southampton's chart-topping UK garage duo Artful Dodger - will be shooting the film in the Derby Road area of Southampton in August.

Director and writer Richard Chorley has based the storyline of the film, which will call on the talent of local youngsters aged 11 to 18, on the formative experiences of Southampton chart-topper Craig David.

The film follows a young boy who, like Craig, is obsessed with music and is determined to go right to the top of the charts.

The film-makers have applied for funding for the project from several groups, including the Regional Arts Lottery Programme and Southampton City Council, and are also inviting various Southampton businesses to get involved.

The professional-standard short drama, to be shot entirely on 35mm film, will be co-produced by youngsters from the inner city area of Southampton, working with the film company.

Between ten and 20 actors will be picked from local youngsters in auditions later this summer, while a further 200 will have the chance to feature in the film as extras.

The project, as well as celebrating Southamp-ton's burgeoning garage scene, is intended to involve as many young, talented people as possible. The soundtrack for the film will also be provided by youngsters attending a music workshop, and will be produced by Mark Hill in the Artful Dodger studios.

Organisers will be offering youngsters aged 11-18 the chance to take part in a series of film-training courses. Silent Soul is likely to have its first screening on Meridian TV later this year.
