Saints came from a goal behind to roll over TP47 of Finland 4-1 in the second game of their pre-season tour thanks to three headed second half goals and some wing wizardry from Fabrice Fernandes.

The Frenchman, whose form has been patchy since he arrived for £1.1m from Rennes last year, showed what he can do with an impressive display on the right side of midfield.

When he played last season it was mainly on the left but, save the match against West Ham, Saints fans never really saw the best of him - but this taster certainly whetted the appetite.

Fernandes has plenty of skill and trickery and a left foot to die for - and he used it to great effect as he regularly sprinted down the right wing and cutback to cross in with his left peg.

It was two of those in-swinging crosses which led to the final two goals. Firstly, on 71 minutes, Fernandes found the head of Kevin Davies who flicked the ball past the keeper into the corner of the net for his second goal in as many games on this tour - and again he looked positive and confident.

Then, just four minutes later, Fernandes curled in a right-wing free-kick which landed perfectly on the head of Jo Tessem who produced the kind of finish you expect from him and steered the ball into the middle of the goal.

It was an odd looking Saints team which took to the pitch at the start of the game - Svenssons, Anders and Michael and Wayne Bridge again weren't considered fit enough to start so Jason Dodd played at left-back with Paul Telfer at right-back.

The midfield of Chris Marsden, Rory Delap, Matthew Oakley and Fernandes was remarkably fluid with the players regularly switching positions.

But it took conceding a goal to kick-start a Saints side who struggled to find their feet with their unfamiliar backline.

TP47's goal came courtesy of Roman Miroschnitcenko whose scuffed shot from the edge of the area somehow trickled across the uneven pitch into the bottom corner of the net.

After that setback Saints stepped it up a gear and, without ever hitting top form, were far too classy for their opponents.

It took the visitors just nine minutes to equalise when Davies held the ball up on the left and pulled back to Marsden whose first time left footed cross fell to the right boot of Oakley who hit a wonderfully controlled volley back across the keeper - it took quite some control to keep the ball down.

Early in the second period Saints had efforts from James Beattie and Claus Lundekvam cleared off the line before Brett Ormerod headed home his third goal in two games from Davies' cross.

Then came the Fernandes crossing show and that was pretty much that against a TP47 who seemed a bit overawed once Saints turned up the intensity level a couple of notches.

They will certainly face a sterner test tonight against a Bodens team desperate to win.
