The annual Lymington Town Sailing Club Perisher's Race saw nine brave entries on the start line last Sunday, despite a strong easterly wind and a delicate snow flurry.
Over eager Jon Heissig leapt off the line seconds early and had to return while the fleet sailed away.
Race officer Nigel Walbank, starting the race from the river line, as Baverstock the offshore start boat is in refit, set two windward laps to the east, and a return up river to finish. This was unfavourable for the asymmetric spinnaker flyers who revel in open waters and gave the advantage to the reaching rigs.
David and Danielle Pitman put in a good performance in their Hurricane 5.9 to take line honours. Jon Heissig recovered well to be first by three seconds on corrected time, but after it was pointed out that he had sailed a slightly shorter, incorrect course, leaving out the final leeward mark. He appropriately retired. This handed the win to Mike Beggs in his Vortex who came in just two seconds on handicap ahead of the Pitmans.
Overall results: 1 Ever Decreasing Circles (Vortex 1021) Mike Beggs, 2 Bulldog (Hurricane 5.9 453) David and Danielle Pitman, 3 Uncle Monkey (RS600 709) Andy Heissig, 4 Bouncing Ben (Nat 12 3478) Tim and Miume Knight, 5 De Rigeur (Laser 4000 4310) James Le May and Steve Ramm.
