Vernham Dean crashed out of the North Hants League Cup at home to Whitchurch United Res, while in the League Winchester City A beat Broughton Res but were hard-pressed to do so, and Tadley Town Res came out best of a nine-goal bonanza at home to New Street A.

This result may not be as big a shock as one would imagine: this win means these teams have shared the spoils by winning two apiece.

Dean were quickly into their stride and took the lead with a goal from Gregg Nixon in the third minute. Tight marking prevented them from adding to their tally and they were rocked back on their heels midway through the second half when Alex Liddle levelled the scores.

In the first period of extra-time, Louis Rogers out jumped the keeper to lay on the second, and Andy Kitson lobbed the keeper for the third. Gregg Nixon pulled one back, but by then Whitchurch had booked their place in the final, in which they will meet either Winchester City A or Tadley Town Res.

In a game that was close but very scrappy, City were depleted by reserve team demands and lost a couple of players who have moved on.

Broughton put up a good solid performance, and created enough chances to have won the match, but poor finishing let them down.

Phil Anderson put City in front after two minutes, but this was cancelled out when a bad back-pass let in Gary Lane, ten minutes from the interval, Alan Dipper's cross was headed in by Steve Tribbeck for the winner.

Both sides gave of their best, supremacy zig-zagging from end to end. Kevin Flain opened Tadley's account, but Tom McMillan struck to keep things even at the halfway stage.

The home side lost three players, including Terry Saunders, whose gashed knee required suturing in hospital. Maybe winning was some small consolation, as second-half goals came from Tom Cooper, Andy Burt, Andy Nash and Andy Hynes, who had the easiest of tap-ins for the winner.

Spare a thought for Tom McMillan who scored all four goals but still finished up on the losing side.
