Local anglers figured prominently during a Champion-of-Champions shore heat held along the Milford Shingle bank where smoothhound, black bream, wrasse, pout and gurnard supplied the action.
Twelve anglers qualified for the semi-finals to be held at Hengistbury Head in August during the Wessex Division of the NFSA shore heat event, which was fished to the measure & return system.
Greg Nolan, representing the Hamble club, qualified for the next round with 107 points along with fellow club member Tony Spridgeon with 56 points. Dave Taylor from Woolston also goes through to the next round along with Steve Hurst representing Ashlett SFC. Four members of the Lymington club also progress, including Steve Moore (126 points), Jane Hopkins (107), Nigel Shoat (33) and Roland Blomfield (87).
The overall winner on the night was Nick Bainton representing Poole Dolphins with 146 points
A Readers AC Open held around the shores of the Isle of Wight attracted 153 competitors with Steve Morris scooping the £250 awarded for the best specimen fish with a 9lb 11.50oz bass. The £100 prize for the heaviest bag was won by George Bernowicz with 47lb 3oz while Mark Knight was £153 better off after beaching a 9lb 15.50oz smoothhound which was the heaviest fish. Liz Cunningham won the ladies section with 2lb 11.50oz while the top junior was M Scott with 1lb 13oz.
The CIU boat knockout championship is well under way with the Hamble club having mixed fortunes during the past week. During a shore fixture held at Weston, Eastleigh WMC got the better of Hamble by 3lb 4oz to nothing, the Eastleigh four-man-team beaching two flounders and a solitary bass.
On the boats the Hamble club faired far better with both its teams going through to the next round.
During a match held off the Needles Hamble A, comprising Tony Spridgeon, Colin Searles, Ray Ashby and Rob Shattock, had a convincing victory recording 113lb 8oz while their opponents, Leigh Park B could only muster 59lb 50oz. The best fish of the day, however, a 12lb 8oz undulate ray was bagged by Richie Burnett who was representing Leigh Park.
The Hamble B team, comprising Neil Powdrill, Keith Coleman, Travis Webling and Des Row, got the better of Hill Park Memorial A during a match off the Nab Tower by 49lb 8oz to 14lb.
