The Brighton Hill Community College Under-13 Boys Tennis Team have surpassed the success of their Under-17 comrades by winning the Southern Regional Final of the British Schools Tennis Competition.
Playing against Dr Challoners School, who have won the national competition for the last two years, Brighton Hill Community College were ready for a tough battle.
Totally Tennis, an LTA National Performance Centre, supplied the venue for the match, which got off to a great start.
Basingstoke's Matt and Jack Waissen both won their singles matches, but the talent of the opposing Berkshire school was too much for Ben Foxley and Simon James.
In what was expected to be the deciding doubles matches, the home side won one and lost one, leading to a 3-3 tie.
The match was so close that even after a count-back on games, a winner could not be found, with both teams having won 23 games each.
So, with it all boiling down to a tie-break, the Waissen brothers paired up again and, under immense pressure, managed to produce a convincing 7-4 win to take the match.
PE teacher Madeleine Probyn said: "I am absolutely jubilant that the team has reached this stage of the competition. They have never beaten Dr Challoners School before and this win should provide them with a great confidence boost for the national finals, which are to be held later this year."
