Two stoppage-time goals sent Southampton Saints plummeting to their first defeat in the FA Women's Premier League Southern Division at Winchester City yesterday.
Sue Lopez's side, who won their opening nine fixtures before being held to a draw by Portsmouth FC Ladies, were finally undone by leaders Bristol City 2-1.
It was a crying shame for the Saints, who were leading by a 56th-minute Kelly Baker goal going into time added on, but had two key players struggling with injury.
Skipper and defensive linchpin Lynn Armstrong was barely mobile as her troublesome knee stiffened and, worst of all, England squad goalkeeper Toni-Anne Wayne had a dead leg after being clattered midway through the second half. With the injury clearly hampering her, Wayne dropped a shot four minutes into time added on and was beaten by the rebound. Then a minute later, Saints failed to clear a right-wing cross and Heidi Bevan pounced for Bristol's winner.
Saints, who started the day level on points and goal difference with City, now have it all to do to reclaim top spot.
Lopez said: "Bristol are a very strong and fit side. Eight of their players train with City's boys' Academy. They're a bit Wimbledon-like in the way they play and they shut you down like lightning. We needed to be at our sharpest to cope with that today and at times we weren't, but you can't legislate for injuries."
Saints rest next weekend before travelling to Millwall on November 9.
