WHITELEY Village Outlet Shopping was buzzing with activity yesterday morning but it wasn't the start of the sales.
Yesterday was day one of the Human Zoo and, live on the Power FM Breakfast Show, six contestants moved into the conservatory complex in Whiteley which will be their home for up to ten days.
The contestants are taking part in an endurance test/popularity contest which will see them living in full public view in the Zoo and performing elimination tasks live on Power FM. The winner will receive £5,000 and a luxury holiday.
The first contestant to enter the house was Rupert Bolger, 35, from Whiteley. His wife, Chrissie, and their four-year-old son, Oscar, were there to wave him off.
Not every contestant had friends and family to wave them off. Carley Jelliff, 19, from Hilsea, Portsmouth, Kirsty Faichen, 25, from Gosport and Martin Rowe, 21, from Hedge End, were alone - not that they minded.
Tim Miller, 21 from Portswood, Southampton, had the loudest supporters.
His boyfriend, David Tomlinson, and friends Steve Maidment and Michael Ghee had been in Whiteley since early morning to see him go in.
"I'm very excited for him," said David. "I think he has a good chance of winning because he's a really cool, genuine person."
"He's going to miss his cigarettes," said Steve. "He's got the patches, so hopefully he'll use this as an opportunity to give up smoking."
Sarah Hunt, 22, from Gosport, was waved off by her boyfriend's parents, Annette and Paul Malec.
"I work nights so I'm going to come by first thing every morning to see how she's doing," said Annette. "I might even wake them up!"
The contestants perform their first elimination task on Monday and the first person will be evicted on Tuesday. The winner will be announced on October 31.
Tune into Power FM on 103.2 and keep reading the Daily Echo to find out how the contestants are getting on.
