A WOMAN shop assistant has described the terrifying moment she was attacked with a CS-type spray during a robbery in the New Forest.
Mandy Evans was sprayed in the face as she attempted to stop a hooded robber stealing cash from Forest News in Lyndhurst Road, Ashurst.
The mother of two bravely grabbed the raider and tried to prevent him getting away - but was sprayed again by his accomplice.
Mrs Evans and the shop's owner, Christine McNulty, who was also attacked, were left with streaming eyes and breathing problems.
They were treated at the scene by ambulancemen as police mounted a major search for the two robbers.
Mrs Evans, 46, of Ashurst, said: "I ran towards the till as soon as I realised that someone was attempting to steal the takings.
"Suddenly I was sprayed in the face by a shadowdy figure from my right.
"My eyes were streaming and my lungs were full of whatever the substance was, but anger made me try to stop the man at the till.
"I grabbed the back of his hood but was sprayed again and he got away.
"They didn't use any physical force and no knives or guns were produced, but it was still a terrifying experience."
The raiders struck on Saturday afternoon, but police withheld details until yesterday.
The two men, who are thought to have escaped with about £200, sped off towards Totton in a small white car.
Det Con Neil Cheyne, of Totton CID, said: "The store is in a parade of shops on a busy road.
"The robbery happened just before 4pm and the men must have been seen by people who were either driving past or visiting other shops.
"We would urge any witnesses to come forward as they may have vital information that could help our investigation."
The man who stole money from the till is described as white, aged between 20 and 25, about 5ft 7in, stocky, with fair hair. He was wearing a red and white striped football shirt.
His accomplice is described as Asian, about 5ft 6in, thin, with short black hair. He was wearing dark clothing.
