After visiting India, Stephen Webb decided he had to bring the Auto Rickshaw to this country, and now owns, Freewheeler Autos, Ocean Village, Southampton

I FIRST saw an Auto Rickshaw while on holiday in India. It was a pickup version delivering supplies to my hotel. I couldn't believe that something so functional could have so much character and ooze so much style.

The Rickshaw was clearly a peoples' champion in much the same way as the Fiat 500 was to Italy or the Citroen 2CV was to France and indeed the Mini here in the UK. I was hooked.

After several test drives it became clear that riding one was more of an experience than merely a journey. I decided then that this 'jewel' of India must be made available in the UK; the decision to end my career in the City was made.

Some 18 months later we now have the full range available meeting the required standards for UK road legislation, a journey made easier with the excellent support and expertise readily available in Southampton.

The first vehicles to be delivered will be going into the restaurant delivery sector - what could be a more authentic way of having a curry brought to your door?

Other applications we are discussing with clients include mobile advertising for goods and services, event promotion, garden centres, wedding hire, taxis and in-store displays.

They are also great fun for use as personal transport, perfect for leaving congestion behind in towns and cities.

While they are naturally suited to riding in the sunshine, with modern technical clothing there is no reason why you can't enjoy a ride at any time of year.

Power comes from easy to maintain four-stroke petrol or diesel engines.

Freewheeler Autos carry out all modifications to meet UK road legislation. Running costs are extremely low and ownership is from £3,250 +vat. Warranty as standard.

I must warn you however that when you drive one many people will smile at you and might even talk to you. Can you handle that?
