BAWDY behaviour is being positively encouraged as Waterside theatre Company ask audiences to leave their inhibitions at home for an evening of music hall.
According to director Pam Paronio, "whistling, shouting and similar displays of enthusiasm will be positively welcomed. The audience will be seated at tables in the auditorium and will be encouraged to join in!"
Music hall began in the early 19th century when tavern landlords seeking to draw custom would hire song and dance acts, and the audience, boisterous with alcohol, would heckle and join in with their favourite performers and songs.
Pam, who has been involved with amateur theatre for 34 years, adds: "Our music hall tribute is based loosely on the Victorian and Edwardian era with a traditional chairman, comedy and melodrama and songs including some from more modern musicals too such as My Fair Lady, Oliver, and Les Miserables which are set in this era or before.
"It gives everyone the chance to star and us to nurture hidden talents." Though the first production under the company's new name of Waterside Theatre (formerly Esso Music and Drama Group), they are no strangers to music halls and this is the third to be co-ordinated by Pam Paronio. She is assisted by Julia Allen who is making her debut as musical director.
23rd - 25th October, Waterside Theatre, Holbury. Performance: 7.30pm (Saturday matinee at 2.30pm). Tickets: from £5. Box office: 023 8084 1533.
