THE boss of one of Southampton's most popular pubs is selling up after being sickened by an outbreak of violence.
The Le Tissier Arms/Feet, a popular watering hole for Saints fans and supporters from around the country, has proved a huge hit since it opened just yards from Friends Provident St Mary's Stadium 15 months ago.
But its future is now shrouded in doubt after owner Peter Young decided to quit after two regulars were hospitalised in a huge brawl before a match.
He admitted it was a wrench to leave but said he could not continue after the incident in which thugs threatened to burn down his pub.
"I am totally gutted but I'm not going to sit there and watch that sort of thing again," said Mr Young.
"I was perfectly happy but I just couldn't put up with that sort of thing."
The incident at the pub in Albert Road North, which is decked out with signed kits from all the Premiership sides, happened after Saints' first home match of the season in August against Birmingham.
A group of about seven thugs in their 20s and 30s from Weston took offence at a Pompey shirt attached to the roof and ripped it down.
They fled outside but were chased by a group of drinkers at the pub who tried to challenge them and a street brawl took place further down the road.
Two people had to be taken to hospital, including one who suffered a broken eye socket.
Mr Young said the group even threatened to torch his pub.
He added: "One of the reasons I put the shirt up was to try to show there does not need to be anything stupid between the sides.
"I did half expect some problems ahead of the Pompey match itself but not months before.
"When I opened it I got permission from Matt Le Tissier to use his name and he was very nice about it.
"Most of the Southampton fans are upset that I've decided to go but I always said if there was ever any trouble I would get rid of it. It's the most well known pub in the Premiership and away fans were always welcome.
"I tried to get the shirt back when they took it but these guys were just thugs."
Mr Young said he was currently in talks with a brewery interested in taking over the pub but he did not know their plans for it.
He added: "I would like to thank the fans for all the support they have given us and the pub and hope it will be there under the new owners."
