PASSENGERS on an Eastleigh bus were left showered with glass after vandals threw a stone at a window.

Customers on the Solent Blue Line Number 2 service were shaken up by the experience on the double-decker in Stoneham Lane.

No one was reported as seriously hurt in the incident, which happened on Sunday at about 1pm as the bus travelled from Southampton to Fair Oak.

A police team immediately launched a search of nearby fields and pathways but found no sign of the culprits, thought to be a group of teenagers.

Motorists were also stopped in a bid to track down the stone throwers.

A spate of similar crimes took place in August, including an incident when a truck driver narrowly escaped death after a brick was thrown at his windscreen from a motorway bridge.

Investigating officer PC Kerry Godwin said: "Obviously teenagers do not appreciate the damage they could cause with this kind of stunt.

"There could be a very serious injury if they caused a crash."

Dave King, engineering manager for Blue Line, said this kind of incident was common, happening up to 12 times a month.

He added: "Normally it's worse in the school holidays. Stoneham Lane is quite a problem.

"I've had two or three there just in the last month.

"Unfortunately it's something we just have to live with but it costs me a lot in engineering and glass."

Anyone with any information about the incident is urged to contact Eastleigh Police on 0845 045 4545 or the anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
