VANDALS have caused £2,000 of damage after breaking into a Portchester school.

Paint was thrown around and graffiti daubed on the walls of a temporary classroom at Wicor Primary School.

Computer equipment was destroyed and coursework ruined by the vandals, who broke in over the weekend through a window.

A camera and guitar were also damaged, and human faeces was found on the floor of the classroom.

The attack has been condemned by parents.

Kim Wilcox, whose seven-year-old daughter attends the school, said: "I think it is completely out of order that work has been ruined and classes disrupted. It is just mindless."

Portchester ward councillor Joan Eastman said: "Unfortunately, schools are often seen as soft targets by vandals. Even though caretakers do a wonderful job they cannot be everywhere at the same time.

"This latest vandalism is very disappointing as it will ultimately all have to be paid for."

The attack comes two weeks after Fareham Council and Hampshire Police, backed by the Daily Echo, launched a taskforce to crack down on vandalism across the borough.

Police have vowed to step up patrols in so-called hotspot areas.

Officers investigating the latest attack have issued an appeal for anyone who saw anything suspicious at the Hatherley Crescent school between Friday afternoon and 7am yesterday morning to contact them on 0845 045 45 45.
