A SOUTHAMPTON inn has beaten off competition from across the country to scoop a prestigious pub in bloom competition.
The Cowherds on the city's common has won the award which is entered by hundreds of hostelries throughout the country.
Robert Mitchell, landlord of the inn, said his success was because he had links with various charities.
He said: "We have worked with the RSPB and the International Tree Foundation to make the Cowherds' garden supportive of worthwhile causes.
"Guests at the inn love to sit and enjoy a meal in the gardens and often comment on the latest addition.
"The display of hanging baskets in particular always provides a talking point for visitors - it's great to have our efforts recognised with this award."
The Cowherds has now won £200 with which to enjoy a celebratory staff party.
