A CLEAN-up operation has been hailed a success after oil spilled from a tanker while it was refuelling at Esso's refinery at Fawley.
The Jaynee W was taking on oil at 5.50am on Saturday when an estimated 200 gallons spilt into Southampton Water.
Booms were put up around the spillage allowing the oil to be collected and removed. Shipping operations were suspended while the booms were in place but were resumed later.
Staff from the Oil Response Centre in Southampton helped with the clean-up. Checks of the water carried out yesterday by both Esso and Solent Coastguard revealed the operation had been successful.
