PASSENGERS on a Southampton-based cruise liner that hit a pier as it docked in the Canary Islands have been paid £100 compensation each after the trip was cut short.
Sundream arrived back in port on Saturday morning, almost a week after she struck the harbour side in high winds halfway through her voyage.
The 30,000-tonne ship was being guided into port on the island of La Gomera by a local pilot at 7am last Sunday when captain Roy Dearman realised something was wrong and took control. But by then it was too late to avoid a collision.
After two days of repairs in Tenerife, further ports of call in Madeira and Lisbon were cancelled and the liner headed back to Southampton.
Further permanent repairs in Southampton mean a two-day delay for 1,000 new passengers before they can set sail for Portugal, Spain and Morocco.
