SKATERS took to their wheels around the streets of Southampton yesterday as part of a massive rollerblading event organised by the city council.
More than 700 people from both sides of the Channel took part in Euroblade, a record number in the event's three-year history.
The route took rollerbladers on a ten-kilometre route around the city, starting and finishing at St Mary's Stadium in Northam.
Rollerbladers from across the country were joined by 500 participants from the French port of Le Havre who made the early morning ferry trip to take part.
The event was a joint collaboration between the two councils and supported by Hampshire police who helped marshal the route by organising rolling roadblocks around the city as the skaters took to the streets.
Councillor Peter Wakeford said: "This is a fantastic event that not only is enjoyed by those to take part but also promotes good citizenship between the two cities. This year it is particularly significant as it is the 30th anniversary of the twinning between Le Havre and Southampton."
Participates of all ages and all abilities completed the route around the city centre in under two hours.
Crossing the finish line in sprinting style Tom Adcock, 14 of Highfield, Southampton, said: "It was a really good event. We all go out skating almost every night so it was good to be part of this."
Uther Hermes, ten, added: "I did it last year and enjoyed it again today. It was nice taking part alongside the French people. Rollerblading is really popular over there."
Sharon McLusky, 48, said it was a good opportunity to improve her skills. "I have been rollerblading for about 18 months and really enjoyed doing this."
