THE hilly 40-kilometre time trial course round Whitsbury decided the outcome of the seventh Glenn Longland Classic race, spread over two days at Downton, near Salisbury.
Victim of a puncture and a broken gear cable last year, Rowan Horner (VC St Raphael Waite Contracts) overcame the fright of an oncoming car near Fordingbridge this time, emerging unscathed, a clear winner of the final, decisive stage, made difficult by a cold northerly wind.
Horner overcame a two-second deficit on last year's winner, Danny Lloyd (Endura Sport Principia), who gained the advantage in the opening prologue hill climb to the top of Wick Down on Saturday.
Lloyd took 4min 7sec to cover that 2.4-kilometre stretch to beat both Horner and clubmate Matt Melville, who shared second place. Though Melville won the uphill sprint which decided the outcome of the second stage the three riders and Lloyd's teammate, Neil Coleman, were all credited with the same time.
The outcome of that second stage, handicapped in groups decided by the individual abilities of the 51-strong entry, remained uncertain for all but three of the 45 kilometres. The race was sponsored by Chantilley Data Security.
Antelope RT's national record breaker Ralph Dadswell, was meanwhile setting another place-to-place record to equal the 32 British records broken by Monty Holbein over a century ago. Taking full advantage of the wind, Dadswell paired up with Marina Bloom (Walsall Roads CC) on his tandem tricycle in Birmingham and took 4hr 57min 20sec to reach the heart of London to clock a new RRA record for a mixed combination. The family of Bob Redrup, the retired school teacher from Fareham who died suddenly riding the course of a race he was due to compete in France last month, say his cycling friends are welcome to attend his funeral service, at St John's Church in Redlands Lane, Fareham, on Friday, October 10 (3pm) and afterwards at Fareham Wheelers' clubroom in Wallington Community Centre. Flowers and dark suits will not be welcome, however.
