TRAVELLERS camped on Southampton Common were last night preparing to move off after eviction papers were served.
Some of the dozen caravans had already left the site off Highfield Lane late yesterday evening, leaving piles or rubbish and old blankets.
The remainder were packing up ready to clear out this morning, days before a court hearing to finally evict the group was due to take place.
Highfield residents have welcomed the rapid departure.
Portswood councillor Calvin Horner said: "If travellers get moved on in less than two weeks it's quick work and the officers need to be congratulated. I'm very pleased they're leaving and I'm sure the residents will be pleased to see them go."
More than a dozen vehicles drove on to the site ten days ago. Since then, the police and Southampton City Council have been pushing through proceedings to evict them.
If was believed at first that the area was a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
But further checks by city environmental bosses revealed that the land was ordinary common owned by the council.
Welfare checks have already been done by council social cohesion staff on the condition of the travellers and their families.
Police are also working with the council and liaising with concerned residents.
A City Council spokesman said: "Legal action has commenced."
