Saints legend Lawrie McMenemy has been invited by the FA to act as an ambassador for England in Turkey next week.

The former Dell boss and Daily Echo columnist will join ex-Leicester City manager Gordon Milne, who was in charge of three Turkish clubs, ahead of England's crunch Euro 2004 qualifying tie in Turkey tomorrow week.

The pair will attend a Turkish player of the year dinner on Monday and visit a school for under-privileged children in central Istanbul the following day.

Former England assistant manager McMenemy is no stranger to such overseas trips.

In February 2002 he, along with former Spurs and England defender Gary Mabbutt, visted war-torn Afghanistan.

The pair led teams from the British forces and combined Kabul clubs onto the pitch at Kabul's Ghazi Stadium for the Game of Unity, the first match to be played in the stadium for several years.

Former Saints assistant boss John Gorman, meanwhile, has made a quick return to football after being named caretaker-manager of Second Division Wycombe.

Gorman left White Hart Lane following the dismissal of Glenn Hoddle last month and has taken over on a temporary basis at Wycombe, who sacked Lawrie Sanchez on Tuesday.

Gorman, who also worked alongside Hoddle for England and Southampton, will be in charge until November 1 and is a candidate for the full-time job.
