A MOTORIST roared into Winchester in a family heirloom to retrace his grandfather's century-old tyre tracks.

Julian Bennett, from Oxfordshire, re-created the magic of a motoring legend by driving from Crystal Palace to Brighton via Margate, Folkestone, Bexhill and Winchester in a 100-year-old Cadillac. Mr Bennett followed the same 1,000-mile stretch that his grandfather, Frederic Bennett, covered in 1903, 1913 and 1953 in the same car, in what were known as "Bennett Runs".

City mayor Councillor Jean Hammerton met Mr Bennett at The Broadway, where he posed for a photo under the steadfast gaze of King Alfred's statue.

The Cadillac was imported into the UK shortly after it made its debut at the 1903 New York Auto Show. The car, still very much in its original state, has recently been through its MOT in preparation for the event.

The Bennett Run is taking place in aid of the Motor and Allied Trades Benevolent Fund. A "guess the miles and guess the times" competition can be found on the Run's website at www.bennettrun.org
