SOUTHAMPTON Test MP Dr Alan Whitehead has presented computer equipment worth over £22,000 to local schools.

Dr Whitehead was at Tesco's giant superstore in Millbrook on Friday to hand over the equipment to pupils.

Schools in Southampton have collected Tesco vouchers worth £22,170 to buy the equipment including PC's and printers.

All schools in the city are set to benefit from the scheme. Representatives from five schools, Bellemoor Secondary, Hollybrook Infant, the Holy Family RC First and Middle School, Mansel Infant School and Redbridge Community School were there to pick up their equipment.

Tim Mason, marketing director for Tesco, said: "Tesco Computers for Schools scheme is more successful than ever.

"This year alone, 1,500 new schools have joined the scheme, bringing the total of UK schools registered to take part in Computers for Schools to 30,000."

He added: "The schools in this area have done particularly well this year, collecting £22,170 of equipment.

"It takes a lot of cakes sold at the school fair to raise enough for a computer. We hope this will help give a big boost to local schools and that the equipment will make a real difference to the children in the area."
