Creation to Crazy, Southampton Musical Society, Central Hall, Southampton
GEORGE TINSLEY'S compilation is the history of Southampton Musical Society from its beginnings in 1928 (first performance was Handel's Messiah) to the present day with anecdotes and extracts from shows performed over the years.
Director Annie McTaggart, musical director Trevor Defferd and choreographer Dawn Broomfield drew this cast together to create entertainment with a capital E.
Five musicians maintained perfect volume for the natural acoustics of Central Hall, while several notable singing soloists included Monica Charlesworth, Ian Broomfield and Patrick Stewart.
Dawn Broomfield's dancers responded to her choreography with vibrant, energetic performances and included a male tapper extraordinaire. A group of young guest dancers, with a pint-sized scene-stealer, closed the first half.
Three narrators who also sang and danced kept the show flowing.
Creation to Crazy deserves to be repeated; it continues the renaissance of SMS.
Long may this revival continue.
