THERE aren't many bases that multi-talented performer Avishai Cohen hasn't got covered.
He's a bass player, pianist, composer, arranger and band leader - and you can see him in action at the Turner Sims Concert Hall, Southampton next month.
The Israeli-born New Yorker's group is just as varied. The Avishai Cohen Quartet, features pianist Sam Bar-Sheshet from the USA, saxophonist Yosvany Terry, one of the leading figures in Cuban jazz, and drummer Mark Guiliana, also from the USA.
After moving to New York in the early 1990s, Cohen formed his own band and recorded a demo, which eventually reached the celebrated jazz pianist Chick Corea.
Enlisted as a bassist in Corea's group Origin, and still part of the line-up of his New Trio, Cohen gained an enviable international platform.
He is also well known for his appearances with such jazz greats as Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove and Wynton Marsalis.
Currently making waves with his own groups, Cohen's sound incorporates elements of rock, jazz, pop and hip-hop.
In addition to his quartet, Cohen's International Vamp Band is a global jazz collective mixing Middle Eastern and Latin jazz. He has also formed a rock band called Gadu.
Cohen's latest CD Lyla is the first to appear on his own label, Razdaz Jazz. He will be performing music from it at the Turner Sims, which will include reworkings of pop classics such as the Beatles' Come Together and Dr Dre's The Watcher.
Avishai Cohen is at the Turner Sims Concert Hall on October 9 at 8pm. Tickets cost from £8. Box office: 023 8059 5151.
