WORLD record-breaking hurdler Colin Jackson was right on target when he opened a new athletics track recently at West Tytherley's Norman Court School, writes Andy Simmonds.
Colin proved such a hit with pupils and staff at the school that he's been invited back again next year. School marketing and administration officer Beverley Smith said: "It was a scoop to get him to perform the ceremony. Roger Black was originally asked but he couldn't make it. Colin is a really nice guy and he's promised to run for us next year. He was really wonderful with the children."
The top hurdler performed the official opening ceremony of the independent school's running track and 10-acre extension to a 40-acre playing field last Saturday. It marked the school's 50th anniversary of its move to Hampshire from Kent. The school was founded in 1881.
Norman Court School pupil 12-year-old Ella Storey - holder of the National Prep-School 800 metres title - presented Colin with a 'thank you' card.
More than 400 ex-pupils attended the school's champagne birthday bash. Test Valley's mayor Pat West was also present, and the Royal Marine Cadets provided an extravaganza of music.
Norman Court School bosses are hoping to win over Lottery chiefs in a bid for a cash grant. It's intended to build a new sports pavilion and enhance facilities further.
