Winchester City are a point behind Totton with a game in hand after a hard-fought 5-2 home win over battling BAT.
The rock-bottom Tobaccomen have yet to bank a point, but they gave the title favourites an early jolt with a 13th-minute Dave Roberts goal.
Andy Forbes levelled two minutes later, sidefooting home Matt Bicknell's free kick, and he struck again from a penalty in the 26th minute after having his shirt tugged by Paul Hodder.
BAT hit back through Richard Gregory to level 2-2 at half-time, but City pulled away after the break through Shaun Dyke and two-goal Lloyd Webber.
