THE future of transport was on the streets of Winchester - at least the future as local government would want it.
Cleaner forms of travel were on display in the specially closed off High Street yesterday.
The county and city councils want to promote their use to wean people away from their cars and cut pollution.
The issue of air pollution has been in the public eye this month as Winchester was the first local authority in Hampshire to declare an urban Air Quality Management Area to tackle noxious fumes caused by traffic.
So on display was a zero emission scooter, an Indian rickshaw, electric racing cars built by pupils at St Swithun's School and numerous gas, electric and dual-fuel vehicles. As part of the day The Square was also closed with only a carousel turning where normally only rubber tyres roll. Winchester is an apt spot for its seventh alternative transport day.
The Civitas and Miracles initiatives are part European Union funded and aim to promote cleaner travel in the city.
