Winchester is getting ready to welcome a staggering 20,000 visitors who are due to flock to the city for this year's Festival of Flowers.
The massive event which begins tomorrow is entitled Magnum Opus: In Celebration of Music and blends flowers with the inspiration of music by composers as diverse as Handel, Gershwin and John Lennon.
The five-day festival was last staged ten years ago and organisers at Winchester Cathedral are hoping to raise £100,000 for their Music Foundation.
The 200 arrangers taking part will create a unique fusion of ancient architecture and modern floral artistry in celebration of music and musicians.
A cathedral spokesman said: "It's the biggest home-grown cathedral event that we do. It's an extraordinary event and is made even more special by the fact that it does not happen very often. In a sense it is rather like the Olympics - it wouldn't be as special if it took place every year as when it takes place every four."
A rare chance to see Winchester Cathedral emptied of its usual seating will be available with the award-winning works on display down the nave of the cathedral. Organised by Friends of Winchester Cathedral and staged by members of the Wessex and Jersey National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies, the festival runs from Wednesday until Sunday.
Opening times: Wednesday-Saturday 10am to 6.30pm, Sunday 12.30-4.30pm.Admission: Adults £7.50, concessions £6, children £3. There is no charge on Sunday.
