Southampton won the battle of top and bottom of Redbridge Lane as they crushed a lacklustre Millbrook side 48-10 to stroll in the second round.

The visitors picked off their Hampshire One opponents with two tries apiece from skipper Tony Cador, who, by his own admission had one of his better games, and winger Julian Robins while new recruit from Winchester, Ben Sadowski slotted five conversions and a penalty in the easy success.

They did allow 'Brook back into the game with two tries either side of the break through former skipper Mike Mulcahy and lock Leigh Sign but the senior league opposition were always in control and they picked up in the final twenty minutes to give the scoreline a more convincing feel.

"The forwards played really well," said a delighted Cador, "and after last week, this performance was really pleasing. But we still have a lot to work on.

"In all honesty, we only played for about 40 minutes."

Eastleigh booked their place in the second round with a second-half performance that swept away Surrey Division Two visitors Shirley Wanderers 34-7.

While it took a while for the game to get going - with only prop and outstanding man-of-the-match Neil Ashton's try the sole score of the opening half - Eastleigh got into the stride with some aplomb in the second period once the ball was spread out wide and the platform from the lineout by hooker Steve Shears and Ashton.

With all in place, the pressure was too much for the Wanderers and a neat chip from Peter Noonan, who had increased the lead with a penalty, set up a second try for skipper Wayne Hayward. It was all plain sailing from there with further scores from Wayne Rawlins and Martin Kilby to wrap up the comprehensive success.

"Eastleigh again showed much character in absorbing early pressure and tackled well throughout," said Eastleigh's John Sneezum. "There is much promise for a successful season."

New Milton & District returned with an outstanding result from Sandown & Shanklin, defeating the always-difficult-to-beat-at-home Islanders 21-3, an especially pleasing result given the drubbing the Hurricanes dealt the Foresters last season at Ashley in the league.

There was a sense of dejavu at Holbury where Ellingham & Ringwood pulled off a shock in dispensing of Fawley 23-19 in a re-run of the last season's league contests.

It was exactly the same this time around, whereby is was the Fawley backs against the Ellingham forwards but the home side's finishing did not come up to scratch as the final pass continued to go to ground wheras Ellingham, and full-back Dawffyd Williams in particular, were excellent; his try just after half-time the pick of the scores.

"We were just not quite there," said Fawley vice-captain Lee Haisman. "They had the power up front but we had the backs - just like last year."

Fareham Heathens had little trouble in passing Fordingbridge by 27-0 with a controlled performance although the home side did put up some resistance early on.

Two tries either side of the break was good enough to move Heathens through to round two.

Elsewhere, it was a tale of walkovers as Alresford, Isle of Wight, Romsey, Trojans and US Portsmouth all received byes through to the next round as their due opponents decided against travelling away.
