Bemerton Heath Harlequins bagged their place in the first round proper of the FA Vase after Wootton Bassett Town hit the self-destruct button at Western Way.

The Hellenic Premier Division side had taken a first-half lead but then had a player sent off for bringing down Ian Chalk. The visitors were then reduced to nine-men after disputing the validity of Bemerton's second goal.

Harlequins boss Steve Slade, pictured, said: "It doesn't matter who you are playing, if they go down to nine men then it's got to help you and we were certainly assisted."

Stu Findlay wiped out Wootton's lead right on half-time when the visitors were reduced to ten-men. The ten became nine on 65 minutes when Chalk's header was ruled to have crossed the goalline by the assistant referee and someone spoke out of turn to earn a straight red card.

With strength in numbers, Bemerton substitute Jason Ahmet added a third on 72 minutes and Carl Jones notched a fourth some eight minutes later to complete a 4-1 verdict for Harlequins.

Bemerton will be joined in the first round draw today by Wiltshire rivals Downton who triumphed 3-0 over Calne Town at Wick Lane home.

Mark Savage put the Robins on the road to victory with a firm header from Calvin Cranmer's cross after 13 minutes and they went on to dominate play in the first half.

Early in the second, the Calne keeper was dispossessed by Matt Guy when he tried to dribble with the ball and the Downton striker stroked home their second goal from six yards.

Russell James rattled the Calne woodwork before a terrific 20-yard strike by Guy after 85 minutes sealed the win.

SWL table-proppers BAT finally got their season kick-started with a 2-1 extra-time success at Chipstead - the Tobaccomen's first win of the campaign.

And they did the hard way, BAT substitute Paul West climbing off the sub's bench to crash home a 50th minute equaliser after they had trailed at the interval.

West then turned provider in the first period of extra time with a fine delivery across the area for Richard Gregory to grab a much-needed victory.

BAT boss Andy Leader enthused: "It's a great result for us. We've been down on our luck recently and this should act as a real moral-booster for us especially as we had five first-team regulars out."

New Brockenhurst manager Graham Kemp must have been happy despite seeing his side bow out of the competition 3-2 at Hillingdon Borough.

The Badgers took an early lead when Alan Wright headed over the home keeper but they found themselves 3-1 down at the break. Steve Marwood's header reduced the arrears and they almost forced extra-time but Wright's effort hit the crossbar.

Bournemouth Poppies manager Keith Williams couldn't conceal his disappointment after watching his team go down 1-0 at home to Paulton Rovers.

"I'm very disappointed, it was a very poor performance from us" he said.

Richard Glenister put that one Poppies' opening over the bar and Paulton nicked the win with a goal ten minutes from time.

Portland were also choked after blowing a 2-0 lead at home to Welton Rovers before going down 4-2 in extra-time.

Dave Whalley gave the SWL outfit a 68th minute lead after beating two defenders before rifling his shot past the Welton keeper and it looked all over four minutes later when Chris Evans' cross was turned into his own net by a Rovers defender.

A sloppy defensive error let Welton back in the game and the visitors forced extra-time with a last-minute equaliser.

Portland's ex-Eastleigh striker David Laws was sent off for dissent ten minutes from the end of extra-time with Welton rubbing salt in their wound with two further goals.
