A MAN accused of murdering a Southampton great-grandmother has been found hanged in his prison cell.

Robert Green, 38, was discovered by another inmate at Winchester Prison where he was on remand facing a charge that he killed Stephanie Wearn.

Now Mrs Wearn's grieving daughter says Green's death means justice will never be done.

Green's partner of two years Stephanie Wearn, 57, was found dead at the flat they shared in Pat Bear Close, Redbridge, at the end of July.

Her daughter Rachel Vaudreuil, 33, said: "We have been left in limbo now. I wanted to see him stand trial but now justice cannot be done."

It was the second tragedy involving Green to have hit the family in just two years. The Daily Echo can reveal Green was arrested in April 2001 in connection with the death of his previous partner Leah Feeney, Mrs Wearn's daughter, after she collapsed at her home in Golden Grove.

Police decided not to press charges and an inquest recorded a verdict of accidental death.

The 33-year-old was four months pregnant at the time and the hearing was told she died from a combination of an epileptic seizure and taking methadone.

Devastated Mrs Vaudreuil, of Cumbrian Way, Millbrook, said: "When I heard he was dead I was hurt, angry and upset.

"Now we won't have a trial or anything. I wanted to see a trial and for someone to be punished."

Mrs Vaudreuil revealed her mother, who had one great-grandchild and ten grandchildren, began the relationship with Green after taking pity on him after the death of her daughter, despite concerns from her family.

Green was arrested shortly after Mrs Wearn was discovered beaten to death in her top floor flat.

He made two appearances at court, in Southampton and Winchester, and was due back at Winchester next month for a plea and directions hearing.

Mrs Vaudreuil said: "My mum was really sweet and wouldn't hurt a fly.

"She kept herself to herself but if anybody ever wanted any help she would be there for them.

"I wasn't happy when they started the relationship and did try to voice my opinion, but never got anywhere.

"I had a few run-ins with him - he was scary.

"First it was my sister and now my mum is dead. This has left a big hole in our family."

Winchester Prison spokesman Ivan Augustus said: "I can confirm a prisoner died on Tuesday, September 16. He was Robert Alexander Green. He was found hanging in his cell at about 4pm.

"He was discovered by his cellmate who alerted staff.

"They attempted to resuscitate him but he was pronounced dead by the prison doctor at 4.20pm."

The coroner has been alerted and an internal prison investigation launched.

Last week the Daily Echo reported the Prison Reform Trust's concern about the number of deaths among prisoners at Winchester. Four have now died in the past year, three of whom were on remand.
