AN historic building in Tidworth is under threat from the march of time and the malice of vandals - but steps are being taken to save it.
St Mary's church in south Tidworth was declared redundant several years ago but the nearby St Mary's Mortuary Chapel, which is found on the edge of the woods off Church Lane, is still the venue for an occasional burial and baptism.
Although it can seat just 20 people the old St Mary's Mortuary Chapel was the main church for south Tidworth until the new St Mary's was built in the nineteenth century. It was neglected for many years despite its ancient associations.
It's thought materials for some of the old church came from an earlier church on the site. There is also a tablet with an inscription 'John Smith, first speaker of parliament'.
Even though some attempts have been made to protect it in recent years, concerns have been raised after vandals attacked the chapel in the summer.
Now a concerned resident has called for action to secure its future.
Former teacher Ann Birch has asked Tidworth Parish Council for help.
"Please do not let us lose this building where there is a great sense of history," she said.
Tidworth Parish Council agreed the listed building must be saved and agreed to look into who is responsible for it and whether any funding can be found for its upkeep.
Cllr Andrew Connolly said: "We should look for the owner but if one can't be found the parish council should look after this very special building so that in 100 years time it will be in tip-top condition and saved for future generations."
