EMPTY properties in Test Valley are to be used to help address the pressing need for new housing.
The council's social well-being portfolio holder Cllr Marion Kerley said: "There are quite a lot of properties vacant for long periods. They can sometimes cause problems for the neighbourhood such as vandalism.
"By encouraging the owners to bring these properties back into residential use, a number of benefits are possible.
As well as improving the local area, an occupied property will bring financial benefits to its owner, either as a capital sum when the property is sold or as income from rent."
The council is also highlighting the possibility of converting vacant commercial space, including offices and rooms above shops, for residential use subject to planning permission.
The council would like to hear from anyone who knows of an empty property or lives near one, to encourage its owners to make use of it. Contact Carol Gray on 01264 368602 or cgray@testvalley .gov.uk
