A SIX-YEAR-OLD boy who won a competition to name a pond near his home officially opened the new-look beauty spot this week.
John Batterson, a pupil at Townhill Park Infant School, unveiled a plaque bearing his suggested name for the new spot - Cutbush Hidden Pond - at a ceremony on Tuesday.
His entry beat competition from other children at Townhill Park Infant and Junior schools. The pond and surrounding area has had a complete makeover, organised by neighbourhood wardens Gavin Scott and Gail Davis.
Gail said: "The pond and the surrounding area was just filthy and full of rubbish and not at all used to its full potential. We wanted to clean it up, but at the same time get the community involved.
"Lots of people helped with the clean- up to return the pond to its former glory as a peaceful nature spot for residents to enjoy."
There are also plans to refurbish the jetty so children can study pond wildlife.
The new sign was made and donated by Christian charity Two Saints and people serving community orders will provide the labour for the project.
