New Milton carried off two trophies during the New Forest Men's BA finals at Lyndhurst - including the coveted singles championship thanks to Trevor Rock.

In a roller-coaster game against Roy Hurst of Totton and Eling Rock trailed 5-0 after three ends, led 12-11 following the 14th but then dropped a maximum to go 15-12 down.

Although Rock responded with a three and a single to sneak ahead once more Hurst immediately levelled at 16-16. Rock then weighed in with a crucial full house himself on the 19th end and sealed the title at 21-17 with a two.

New Milton's other success came in the pairs as John Nibloe and Eric Ridge fought back to beat John Smith and Mark Farrant of Iford Bridge.

Turning point in the match came on the 15th and 16th ends when New Milton rattled up a four and six to convert a 14-10 deficit into a 20-14 advantage.

Although Iford clawed back three shots over the next two ends New Milton triumphed 25-17.

The Champion of Champions saw Mike Harland delight the host club by staging a terrific comeback on his home green to wipe out an 11-0 deficit and pip Brian Cuckson of Fordingbridge 21-19.

Fordingbridge had their moment of glory in the triples where Dave Bradley, Ted Gunn and Derek Purse found the green more to their liking than New Milton.

Although the game was close for seven ends, Fordingbridge surged clear to win 23-11.

The fours had a tense finale after Ringwood, skipped by John Thomas, were all square on 19-19 after 19 ends against the Waterside rink of Dave Swainston.

On the next end Ringwood number three Alan Bryant drove the jack into the ditch along with his bowl but Waterside had a wood close to the ditch which held shot.

Thomas fired to take it out, hit a short wood that cannoned into Waterside's shot, knocking it into the ditch to give Ringwood a vital three shots.

Final score was 22-20 after Waterside managed only a last-end single.

The George Sumner two-wood pairs was another close encounter being 13-13 at 15 ends until Ray Read and Ron Poore (Downton) took command to defeat Terry Cox and Laurie Frost (Braeside) 22-15.

Richard Newell (Christchurch) landed the Officers' Cup 22-17 having led Alan Fisher (Verwood) just 15-13 with six ends remaining.
