Cherries 1 - Sheffield Wed 0

MAGNIFICENT Cherries hammered the woodwork four times before finally nailing promotion favourites Wednesday with a last minute winner.

Bournemouth were simply awesome and the scoreine hardly does justice to a quite stunning performance against a team which graced the Premiership just four seasons ago, writes ANDY BISSELL.

After just four minutes, the skilful Garreth O'Connor unleashed a thunderbolt which struck the inside of a post but somehow failed to go in.

And 16 minutes later Marcus Browning, a commanding midfield general, saw his looping header strike the bar.

The uncompromisingly defensive duo of Carl Fletcher and Karl Broadhurst restricted Wednesday's chances to a fierce Shefki Kuqi shot which flashed past a post and a Paul Smith header that was safely collected by Neil Moss.

The visitors, who had won their last three away games, were subjected to a torrid bombardment in the second half.

Cherries struck the post again on 47 minutes following Elliott's drive before Wednesday's Terry Cooke appeared to blatantly trip O'Connor in the penalty area. It remains a total mystery why a spot kick was not awarded.

Cherries frustrations continued when, nine minutes from time, Steve Fletcher took his turn to hit the woodwork before O'Connor slotted home the rebound only to be ruled offside.

The killer blow was finally delivered during the second minute of added time.

Carl Fletcher threaded a pass through the Owls crowded defence which reached Wade Elliott who smashed the ball home to send Dean Court into raptures.

Sean O'Driscoll's team are now unbeaten in five matches and move up to twelfth in Division Two.

The prestigious Wednesday scalp will no doubt add to the quiet confidence which circulates through the corridors of Dean Court these days.
