BOSSES behind plans for a plush new arts centre in the New Forest have vowed to make it the best in Hampshire.
Work has finally started on a multi-million-pound project to transform Hanger Farm, Totton, into a showpiece complex that will rival existing facilities.
The long-awaited scheme also includes a tennis centre, a paddling pool and a large leisure area.
The arts building will be run by Totton College. Principal Mark Bramwell said: "We are determined it will be best in Hampshire."
Mr Bramwell was speaking at a turf-cutting ceremony that was also attended by representatives from Totton and Eling Town Council.
Town council chairman Dave Russell said: "The project has been in the planning stage for more than 12 years and has met many obstacles that have had to be overcome.
"I'm sure local people will have hours of pleasure at Hanger Farm after the new facilities are opened next summer. They will be able to see a play, have a game of tennis, watch their children enjoy the paddling pool or just stroll around the park."
Guests at the ceremony included Mike Shand, vice-chairman of New Forest Council.
He said: "The town and district councils have put a tremendous amount of effort into the project, and it's fantastic that we've finally got to the stage where things are starting to happen."
Cllr Shand referred to the vandalism that had occurred in recent years and the possibility that similar problems could crop up in the future.
He added: "The more the new facilities are used by the community, the less they will be abused."
The £3m project is being funded by grants from several organisations, including the Heritage Lottery Fund, Hampshire County Council and New Forest Council.
