Assistant manager Richie Phippard hailed Lymington & New Milton's superb FA Cup first qualifying round victory over Erith & Belvedere as "probably our best performance of the season."

The soaring Linnets ousted their higher-ranked Dr Martens League Eastern Division opponents 1-0 at Fawcetts Field and could have easily had a few more goals as Kevin James, Warren Kenna and Patrick James all hit the visitors' woodwork.

"It was a really good all round team performance - probably our best of the season so far," purred Phippard.

"The whole team battled really hard and we were unlucky not to have scored a few more. The players seemed to realise what an important game it was for the club and it's always nice to beat a side from a higher league."

The all-important goal came after 15 minutes, Ben Thom-son's left-wing cross was nodded down in the area and Ollie Shaw smacked the ball home to send Lymington & New Milton into today's second qualifying round draw.

The Linnets will be joined in the hat by three other Sydenhams Wessex League sides, Andover, Wimborne Town and Winchester City after they chalked up impressive victories.

Andover went nap against Sussex Leaguers Arundel, Vince Rusher and Sam Rae celebrating doubles as they won 5-0 at The Portway.

Rusher bagged his first after 20 minutes following a mistake in the visitors' defence and the Lions doubled their lead right on half-time when Rae's header hit the bar, dropped down onto the keeper's back and bounced into the net.

On 63 minutes Rusher hit a third and, five minutes later, another Rae header hit the woodwork en route to the back of the net for number four. Substitute Dave Mariner pocketed a fifth ten minutes from time.

Andover secretary Chris Jeremy said: "To be fair we were always well on top and it was something of a one-sided affair in the end."

Free-scoring Wimborne Town netted two early and late goals as they saw off the challenge of Screwfix League Backwell United by a comfortable 4-1 margin.

Wimborne were 2-0 up inside ten minutes as Warren Doyle - with a 18-yard effort - and Geoff Moxham gave them a dream start. Backwell reduced the arrears on the hour mark but further blows in the last ten minutes from Mark Smith and Gareth Barnes' header put the outcome beyond doubt.

Winchester City complete the SWL quartet following their 3-2 awayday success at Ryman Leaguers Metropoli-tian Police.

City moved ahead after 25 minutes, a good move involving Matty Bicknell, David Goss, Mark Blake and Lloyd Webber ended with Shaun Dyke stabbing the ball home.

James Knott crossed Andy Forbes to make it 2-0 just before half-time and it was all over after 56 minutes when Michael Dean played in Bicknell who slammed in their third.

The Police reduced the arrears on 76 minutes and then gave the scoreline some respectability when they pulled another one back in stoppage time.
