SOME of the latest luxury boats money can buy will be on display at Southampton's Boat Show when it launches this weekend.

But for traditionalists looking to sample life on the ocean waves 16th century style, organisers are promising a historical treat.

A remarkable replica of the Golden Hind, which Sir Francis Drake famously circumnavigated the globe in more than 400 years ago, sails into the event on Friday.

During the ten-day show, visitors can sample what life would have been like on board an Elizabethan galleon.

It was built in 1973 and is the only replica to have completed a circumnavigation of the globe.

There are five levels of deck, including the gun deck which features 22 cannons.

James Gower, one of the boat show organisers, said: "It was here 20 years ago and was incredibly popular so we are very excited that it's coming back. There has always been a tradition of having historical boats at the show and they are always a hit with the visiting public.

"It's always an amazing sight seeing the latest boats alongside vessels people used to sail in."

The replica of the Golden Hind, which set sail in 1577 on a three-year adventure, will be manned by a crew in Elizabethan costume and its interior has been re-created in minute detail

Catherine Donald, of the Golden Hind replica ship, said: "It offers a great insight into sailing history and what life would have been like on board in the 16th century."

Tickets for the boat show, which runs from September 12 to 21, can be bought in advance on 0115 912 9111 and for more details go to www.southamptonboatshow.com
