SAINTS winger Neil McCann grabbed his second Scotland goal of the week in Dortmund - but his country's Euro 2004 qualifying chances are still reliant on Germany doing them a favour.
Last night's defeat means the Scots cannot top their group and must defeat Lithuania at Hampden Park next month and rely on Iceland not winning in Germany at the same time in order to book a play-off spot.
McCann, who had grabbed Scotland's opener in last Saturday's 3-1 win over the Faroes, netted a superb consolation on the hour mark last night after Fredi Bobic and Michael Ballack (penalty) had put the hosts in control.
Furious Scotland defender Christian Dailly, meanwhile, has called for a clamp-down on the cheats he claims are infesting international football.
The West Ham man was convinced German players acted unsportingly during the game which saw Scotland substitute Maurice Ross sent off for two bookable offences.
Dailly said: "Something has to be done whether it is by the referee or by FIFA. Until something is done nothing is going to change."
He said: "Of course you get agitated and frustrated but if you book someone once for it they will stop it.
"Until someone clamps down on it, it will keep happening."
