PAUL JONES' first reaction to Birmingham's main penalty shout on Saturday was that Graeme Le Saux had just got enough of the ball.

The Saints' keeper was speaking straight after the game without the benefit of a replay, but had a great view of the left-back's challenge on David Dunn.

He said: "I felt Graeme got a bit of the ball in the tackle, I felt he just nicked it.

"At the end of the day, the referee wasn't certain and has given the benefit of the doubt to the defender."

The big Welshman was pleased with his own personal display, making several important saves to help earn Saints a second Premiership point.

In the 38th minute Geoff Horsfield's powerful drive was turned over by Jones and midway through the second half he was again alert from a Dunn free-kick.

But Jones saved the best until last when, with two minutes remaining, he came quickly off his line to bravely smother Clinton Morrison's one-on-one effort.

"The two main saves were different," he explained.

"The shot from Horsfield came at a quick pace and I was fortunate to get a good touch on it, while the other one Stan Lazaridis played a good ball through and I managed to get a good block.

"I've been travelling around a bit this past week, what with the international, but it's nice to get a game at home, although it is now away to Leeds.

"I'm certainly enjoying being back in goal and personally it is always pleasing to get a clean sheet."

Jones, though, admitted the team were slightly disappointed to have opened their Premiership campaign with consecutive draws.

He added: "We wanted six points from these games, but there are positives which we can take. We have two points and that is something we must build on at Leeds.

"We had a few chances, but didn't take them and the last 20 minutes were extremely bitty.

"We proved in the first half we will always give teams problems, although we didn't do that in the second half and didn't have many chances.

"In the first half we got the ball in the box much more and I wasn't called upon much.

"But sometimes it can be harder to pull out a save when you haven't been so busy.

"The second half they changed it round a bit, playing five in the middle and they caused us a few problems.

"Birmingham are a very hard-working team."

With Antti Niemi expected to make his return from a knee injury for the reserves tomorrow, manager Gordon Strachan could be faced with a difficult choice between his two international goalkeepers for the match against Manchester United on Sunday.

Strachan said: "It's good to see Paul Jones doing well, he made some good saves."
