TWELVE-year-old Jamie Proll proves he's a brave boy - by volunteering to dress up in girls' clothes for charity.
Year 7 Hounsdown School pupil Jamie sets out today from his home in Man-sergh Walk in Totton to ride a girls' bike around Totton, dressed as Baby Spice, to raise money for Hampshire Autistic So-ciety.
The inspiration for his fundraising is that his younger brother Aaron, aged three, has been diagnosed as autistic, and the society has been extremely helpful as the family come to terms with his condition.
"Aaron used to be withdrawn and detached, but now that's been replaced by obsessions," said mum Julie.
"He's fascinated by balloons and fans, and anything that blows in the wind.
"He also takes everything you say literally, and he's very easily distracted.
"We're waiting for a proper assessment, but have been told that may take two years.
"Hampshire Autistic Society runs an 'Early Bird' course for parents, helping them to understand autism, and is there to offer support afterwards."
Julie and husband Mark, who also have a six-year-old daughter, Nadine, are proud of Jamie's initiative, which has so far raised nearly £100 in sponsorship from pupils and staff at his present school and from his previous school, Abbotswood.
He has borrowed a curly golden wig (last worn as Miss Piggy at a fancy dress party) and a girls' bike that is much too big for him.
"He manages to ride it very well, but just to be on the safe side, I'll be riding behind him," said Julie.
And why Baby Spice? "Well, I used to have a crush on her," admitted Jamie.
