Hampshire manager Paul Terry has admitted that he may sign a spinner to replace Wasim Akram as the county's overseas player.

The shoulder injury that ruled Shaun Udal out of the current championship match against Glamorgan and the poor form of Charlie Van der Gucht led to a shock call up for Havant's Richard Hindley.

And with the hot weather making a quality spin bowler even more valuable in the second half of the season, Terry may well decide to find an overseas twirly twin for Simon Katich.

Terry said: "Wasim going was disappointing, it's taken everyone by surprise, but at the moment we're just having a look around, trying to find out who's available - that's basically where we're at.

"We're looking at bringing in another bowler, it could be a spinner and I've got a few names to chase up but there's no point in mentioning them at the moment."

Terry defended his decision to play Hindley when he could have called up Van der Gucht, who is playing for the second XI in a championship game against Sussex at Hove.

He added: "Charlie hasn't been bowling very well, he's struggling a bit and it wouldn't have been right to throw him into a first team game when he's out of form."

Meanwhile, Terry, who had been based in Perth for eight years before returning to Hampshire, has rubbished speculation linking Western Australia's veteran paceman Jo Angel with a move to the Rose Bowl as Wasim's replacement.

Angel has won four Test caps and played a handful of one-day games for Gloucestershire as a 'fill in' for Ian Harvey last season.

But Terry added: "Joey isn't in our thoughts at the moment.

"That's no disrespect to him but it's just a bit out of season for him at the moment."
