HUNDREDS of Southampton schoolchildren sang their hearts out at a special vocal festival in the city.

Youngsters aged between nine and 16 joined together at the event, which was held at the Turner Sims Concert Hall and led by professional animator and composer Lin Marsh.

The event was part of Southampton's Singing City initiative, which has enabled the city council's music services department to extend the vocal teaching team to city schools and bring in outside expertise such as vocal animators to work with teachers and pupils.

Director of music services Philip Litchfield said: "This is a very exciting time for singing in Southampton.

"From very modest beginnings, we are now in a position to launch our full pyramid of choirs in the city.

"From September, singers can join Ready Steady Sing, which is aimed at younger singers, September Young Singers for older, unbroken voices, and Southampton Youth Choir for the more advanced vocalists."
