The first Octogenarians competition took place at The Park Golf Course, Avington, recently.

To be eligible, players needed to have reached their 80th year. Nine members took part in a Stableford competition over the 9 hole Parkland course. Younger members of the seniors' section kindly acted as caddies! Richard Evans, a member at the Park, came up with the idea and generously donated the prizes and provided the bar. All of those who took part are regular players at The Park and enjoy the fact that the course is relatively flat and particularly well maintained to ensure a challenge for all. Betty Goldie was, on the day, the sole representative from the ladies' section and at the grand age of 94 was the most senior player taking part. Mrs. Goldie has been playing golf since the age of four and must be one of the longest-playing golfers in the country. Ninety years of golf ensured she didn't stray from the centre of the fairway. Unfortunately, Diana Evans, who was to have played, was injured in a sporting accident when playing cricket with her grandchildren the previous day! The competition was closely fought and won on countback by Bob Bringloe with 20 points from Tom Harris. The longest drive was won by Harry Welsh, nearest the Pin by Ian Chisholm and the putting competition by Brian Hulme. Players, caddies and guests enjoyed lunch in the marquee after the event. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day and all are looking forward to the challenge next year - and for years to come!.
