The Isle of Wight's bid to host the 2007 Island Games were scuppered yesterday.

An announcement was made that Rhodes was to be the venue for the biennial tournament - but the Greek island hardly celebrated in style.

Their football match against this year's host nation Guernsey had to be abandoned as five of their players - and their manager - were all sent off!

If a team has less than seven players on the field at any one stage, the game is deemed void and Guernsey were promtly awarded a walkover.

The NatWest-backed ev-ent - the tenth running of the games - has three days of competition left but Guernsey's lead in the medals' table after day five was lost to arch-rivals Jersey.

Jersey have 19 golds, 15 silvers and 13 bronzes with Guernsey second with 13 golds, 17 silvers and 14 bronzes.

They were well clear of the Isle of Man with the Isle of Wight back in seventh place with four golds, five silvers and 11 bronzes.

Isle of Wight's two gold medals yesterday came from hammer thrower Catherine Marvin and the table-tennis team event comprising Lucy Pointer, Carl Prean, Daniel Burns and J Hurt, who beat Jersey 4-0 in the final.

Marvin, the second gold medal winner from the Isle of Wight club following Andy Frost's record throw on Monday, won the women's event with a throw of 39.74m, beating teammate Amy Church (39.62) into second.
