HUNDREDS of campaigners are expected to pack into a meeting to hammer out an agreement on what needs to be done to improve Hampshire's most notorious road.

Residents in Wellow, Plaitford, Landford and Romsey have all been invited to an open meeting tomorrow to discuss the deadly A36.

The Daily Echo is pushing for boosted safety measures on the A36, one of the most dangerous roads in the county.

Our campaign was sparked by last month's tragic crash, which claimed the lives of two people, and has spurred local campaigners to demand urgent improvements on the road.

This week's meeting is being organised by Test Valley councillor John Lewis, who represents villages lining the trunk road.

The Conservative councillor backed the Daily Echo bid for change, saying: "Something needs to be done to make the A36 a safer place."

He added: "In technical terms, I have no idea whether speed cameras, new limits or improving junctions, is the answer.

"Whatever people tell me they want to see done, I will take on board and take forward on their behalf.

"I'm certainly not going to tell them what it is that we need to do there."

Speakers from the Highways Agency will address the meeting, as well as Simon Hayes from the Hampshire Police Authority and county councillor for the area Michael Woodhall.

Romsey MP Sandra Gidley and Test Valley councillor Caroline Nokes will also be present.

Mr Lewis said he plans to open much of the meeting to public comment.

The debate starts at 7.30pm at Wellow Primary School in Romsey Road.
